Having long histories are Hirosaki Neputa Festival (Aug. in Hirosaki City), Akita Kanto Festival (Aug. in Akita City), Namahage (Dec. & Jan. in Oga City, Akita Pref.), Morioka Sansa Odori Festival (Aug. in Morioka), Takayama Festival (Apr. & Oct. in Takayama), Danjiri Festival (Sep. in Osaka), Hakata Gion Yamagasa (July in Hakata) and the three major Japanese festivals ; Kanda Festival (May in Tokyo), Gion Festival (July in Kyoto) and Tenjin Festival (July in Osaka)
In contrast, new and popular events are Snow Festival (Feb. in Sapporo), Hakodate Port Festival (Aug. in Hakodate), Earth Celebration (Aug. in Sado), Luminarie (Dec. in Kobe), Setouchi International Art Festival 2010 (July – Oct., 2010 in Takamatsu port and several islands in Seto Inland Sea) and Yosakoi Festival (Aug. in Kochi)
