apanese castle architecture has made remarkable development during the Warring States Era (16th – 17th century) and many castles were constructed. In the early stage of this period they were forts built in places difficult to approach for enemy. Later they were built in open places and used as residences for feudal lords as well as forts. The magnificent buildings also proclaimed the power of the lord. Generally Japanese castle consisted of a castle tower, fortified main court or Hommaru, second court or Ninomaru and third court or Sannomaru protected by tall stone walls and moats. The roof of castle tower was decorated with a pair of dolphin-like image, called Shachihoko. They are believed to have the power of preventing fire.
